Frequently asked questions about the toll sticker and the digitale vignette
What types of vignettes are there? How long and where do they apply? Where do I need it and when am I qualify for a replacement? These and other of frequently asked questions can be found in the following FAQ area.General questions
The toll sticker has been compulsory on Austria's motorways and expressways since 1997. With the Vignette 2018 we offer for the first time an alternative to the traditional toll sticker. The digital vignette is bound to the license plate and offers greater convenience for holders of transferable number plates.
Toll sticker
There are some 6,000 outlets in Austria and abroad ensuring that the toll sticker can be bought easily. There is an interactive search feature for outlets near you under menu item "sale outlets".
Digital Vignette
You can buy the digital vignette either in the ASFINAG toll shop from anywhere within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland or using our free app Unterwegs. You can also purchase the Digital Vignette at the sales offices of the ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC, in various petrol stations and tobacconists, as well as at the ASFINAG toll stations. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to buy the digital vignette at vending machines on selected rest areas.
Info
There are 10-day, 2-month and annual vignettes for both types of vignette (toll sticker and digital vignette).
Annual vignette: is valid for 14 months, from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year.
2-month-Vignette: is valid for a period of two months. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires March 10th, midnight.
10-days-Vignette: is valid for ten days. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires January 19 th, midnight.
ACHTUNG:
There is also no difference in the prices.
All vehicles up to and including 3.5t mpw have to pay toll on motorways and expressways marked in orange (see grafic). No toll sticker is required for the particularly cost-intensive sections, the section toll, where special toll rates apply.
Exceptions to the compulsory Vignette usage
The exceptions shall enter into force in five sections as of 15 December 2019. The legal basis for this is the Federal Roads Toll Act (Bundesstraßenmautgesetz).
The exceptions apply to the following stretches of road:
- the toll road A 1 Westautobahn between the national border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction,
- the toll road A 12 Inntalautobahn between the national border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction,
- the toll road A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn between the national border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction and
- the toll road A 26 Linzer Autobahn (currently still under construction)
Toll sticker
No, you can't do that. The toll sticker is issued for a specific vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
Digital Vignette
The Digital Vignette is linked to the number plate. So if the license plate does not change on the new vehicle, the digital vignette will continue to apply. If the license plate number changes in the course of the vehicle change, a new vignette must be purchased.
ATTENTION: Changes to the licence plate number after the date of validity are only possible for the yearly Digital Vignette and the yearly digital section toll under the following conditions and cost 18 Euro per change:
-
- Change of residence: you move home and you are issued a new licence plate number
- Vehicle is stolen
- The licence plate number is stolen or lost
- The vehicle suffers total accident damage and is written off.
In the cases of stolen or lost vehicle or licence plate number or total damage of the vehicle you will receive a refund for expenses of 18 Euro.
No. No additional toll sticker is required for trailers, caravans, motorbike sidecars etc.
It is not possible to change during the validity period of the vignette. Therefore, if you have purchased an annual adhesive vignette it is not possible to change to a digital vignette during the year of validity (1 December 2017 to 31. January 2019). The reverse is also not possible. For the following vignette year, however, you may decide which form of vignette you would prefer.
Exception: If a windscreen on which an adhesive toll sticker is fixed is broken, we support free, uncomplicated and rapid change to a digital toll sticker.
The current toll regulations can be downloaded. Please also take note of all applicable appendices.
Like with the traditional toll sticker, ASFINAG only performs random checks of the Digital Vignette. As always, our colleagues from service and controls (Service- und Kontrolldienst) (around 100 staff members) ensure that the toll has been paid. There will only be up to twenty automatic toll sticker control cameras on more than 2,200 kilometres of motorways and expressways. These cameras are mobile and change location regularly.
The control systems only store the data of vehicles without a valid traditional toll sticker or Digital Vignette. These data are exclusively used as evidence for toll-related offences and to handle the toll fine claims. No other data are stored or are accessible in any way.
Frequently asked questions about the toll sticker
The following features allow you to tell a real toll sticker from a fake one:
- All toll stickers are produced by a specialist company. Similar to a bank note, they have a security hologram that serves as the main protection against counterfeiting: when you tilt the toll sticker, the federal eagle and the motorway symbol shimmer.
- Also part of the hologram: The year "e.g. 21" refers to the toll sticker's period of validity from 1 December 2020 until 31 January 2022.
- Furthermore, the real toll sticker is not light-permeable even when you hold it against strong light. The same applies to the carrier foil: the writing on one side must not shine through to the other side.
- The surface of the toll sticker is made of a special material that reflects Using a torch, this effect can be easily observed when the toll sticker is attached to the vehicle.
- The empty field on the carrier foil – to which the toll sticker was attached before being pulled off – must not have any adhesive residue on it.
In addition, you can also make a toll sticker authentification online. By entering the toll sticker number including the check digit, the system detects whether the toll sticker is a correctly printed one. The toll sticker number can be found under the printed barcode.
Please enter the toll sticker barcode here:
Car toll sticker
Attach the toll sticker in a visible location on the inside of the windscreen (our recommendation: at top left or near the rear view mirror).
Attention: Do not attach the toll sticker in the tinted section of the windscreen.
Motorbike toll sticker
Attach the toll sticker on a clean and above all non-replaceable part of the motorcycle (e.g. a fork rod or the tank).
Attention: A toll sticker attached to a luggage case or a motorcycle bag is not valid.
Keep it safe. The lower toll sticker section is the carrier foil including serial number. It entitles you to buy an annual pass for a special toll route cheaply: you can get a one-time discount of 40 euros. The toll sticker section also serves as proof of purchase. If your windscreen breaks, this section must be presented to obtain a replacement toll sticker (or to have the toll sticker costs refunded).
Yes, toll stickers are invalid if they are not attached or not punched. However, there are exceptions. If a vehicle is taken for a test drive or transferred, it is sufficient for a 2-month toll sticker to be merely clearly visible behind the windscreen. If you have a yearly toll sticker or a 10-day toll sticker, it always has to be attached to the windscreen. For vehicles that are type-approved as not having a windscreen, the toll sticker has to be carried with you. If you park your vehicle in a rest area where the toll sticker is compulsory, the toll sticker has to be placed inside the vehicle such that it can be clearly seen from the outside.
If the windscreen breaks (from falling rock for example) holders of a yearly toll sticker are either given a replacement or a refund. For this, you need:
- A copy of the registration certificate
- The detached yearly toll sticker and the toll sticker carrier foil
- A copy of the repair invoice from the workshop that replaced the windscreen (please note that in the case of company vehicles the driver must be named, too!)
- The completed and signed toll sticker replacement or refund
- If you require a refund, you also need to provide bank details (bank, IBAN, BIC code and name of account holder)

Frequently asked questions about the Digital Vignette
You can buy the digital vignette either in the ASFINAG toll shop or using our free app Unterwegs.
Buying a digital vignette is a very simple process. The digital vignette can be obtained with just a few clicks:
- Go to the webshop homepage and click on the desired product (10-day, 2-month or annual vignette)
- Enter the vehicle type (car or motorbike) the country of registration, the vehicle licence plate number of your vehicle and the start of validity of the vignette.
- Enter the e-mail address to which the invoice confirmation should be sent and choose the payment method required. You may choose between credit card, PayPal or Sofortüberweisung.
Note: Currently it is only possible to pay by credit card or Paypal in the “Unterwegs” app.
You can also purchase several vignettes and route toll tickets in one transaction.
Basically, you have two possibilities to purchase a digital vignette, either with or without registration in the customer portal.
Furthermore, you also have the opportunity to buy the digital vignette from selected distributors.
Customers can withdraw from the online purchase of a product or service within 14 days - this is also the case when purchasing the digital vignette. The day of purchase is not counted as one of these 14 days. As the withdrawal can also be sent by post, we allow a further three days for postage.
Therefore, the digital vignette is only valid from the 18th day after the date of the online purchase and is only then valid to use the motorways and expressways in Austria.
Please pay attention to this important information:
Buy the digital annual vignette by 13th November at the latest, so that it is valid from 1st December or until at least by the 14th of January, so that it is valid with effect from 1 February (beginning of the new vignette year).
No, that is not possible. To protect the customers, the Telecommunications and Foreign Trade Act (Fern- und Auswärtsgeschäfte-Gesetz (FAGG)) does not allow consumers to waive the right of withdrawal.
Companies are the exempted from to this regulation for which the right of withdrawal does not apply.
Info
Any changes affecting the purchased product such as change of validity or the vehicle licence plate number, can only be made free of charge before the start of validity.
Example 1: You have purchased a 10-day vignette, valid from July 10th. However, your holiday is delayed and you will not leave until July 24th. Now you must alter the beginning of the validity of your vignette in your account by 9th July (23:59 clock) at the latest.
All changes require the customer to register in the customer portal.
Before the start of validity
Changing the vehicle licence plate number can only be made free of charge before the start of validity.
You have purchased a 2-month vignette, which is valid from 16th March. You move home before the validity of your vignette begins and you are issued a new licence plate number, you have entered an incorrect licence plate number by mistake or you wish to use an already purchased vignette for a different licence plate number. For the above cases you must change the data in your account by 15th March (11:59 pm) at the latest.
After the date of validity
Changes to the licence plate number after the date of validity are only possible for the yearly Digital Vignette and the yearly digital section toll under the following conditions and cost 18 Euro per change:
- Change of residence: you move home and you are issued a new licence plate number
- Vehicle is stolen
- The licence plate number is stolen or lost
- The vehicle suffers total accident damage and is written off.
In the cases of stolen or lost vehicle or licence plate number or total damage of the vehicle you will receive a refund for expenses of 18 Euro.
Please note that changes to the approval holder are generally not possible!
ATTENTION: In the app changes of the license plate are only possible before the start of validity. License plate changes after the date of validity are only possible in the webshop via Asfinag.at.
As long as the validity of your vignette has not yet begun, you can change the licence plate number easily and free of charge.
All changes require the customer to register in the customer portal.
As an already registered customer just log in to your account and click on "My Products". Select the product with the incorrect licence plate number and make the necessary correction.
Changes to the number plate after the start of the validity period are normally not possible.
The email address can be changed in the customer account under "My data".
By entering your vehicle licence plate, you can check whether the car has a valid Digital Vignette and for which periods it applies.
Further information on the vehicle owner is not included in this register.
Good to know: A maximum of three queries in one day is possible from one and the same device (desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone). This prevents an extensive wide-ranging check being performed.
No - the digital vignette is bound to the licence plate number, meaning that: If you are an owner of an interchangeable licence plate, pay the fee for the digital vignette for this licence plate and you can use highways and expressways with up to three different vehicles.
